Movers & Shakers: January 09, 2015

Botswana: DCI +0.09%, USD 17.8k

Nothing happened in Bots today.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.47%, USD 2.35m

Another very dull day in Nairobi as activity remains incredibly muted. The only real activity took place in KNCB (unch, KES56.00). There was some smaller activity in the likes of Safcom (unch, KES13.75), Equity Bank (-1%, KES49.00) and Centum (+80bps, KES63.00). However, it was a very uninspiring end to a very uninspiring week in Kenya.

Mauritius: Semdex +0.15%, USD 1m

The bears are loosening their grip in Port Louis as most of the indices closed in the green today, the first time this week. MCBG, Rogers and LUX accounted for 70.3% of total value traded, with MCBG closing at Rs195.50(+0.3%) on the back of 72.8k shares traded. The counter reached a high of Rs196 during the session. The big winner of the day was LUX, rising by 3.4% to close at Rs60 (the stock reached its closing price during the last 2 minutes of the session after trading mostly at Rs58 during the day). SBM has remained flat at a closing price of Rs1.01

Nigeria: ASI -0.91%, USD 15.1m

A very quiet day in Lagos in the absence of any really chunky crosses. Also pleasing was seeing some buying return in a few of the names as we saw banks (+1.96%) and consumers (+61bps) both close in the green. Banks were much quieter than normal with the most notable mover being Zenith (+9.5%, N16.43) on the back of some aggressive local buying late in the session while FCMB (+5%, N2.11) once again saw some chunky trades. Consumers were very quiet although NB (+4.5%, N147.00) and Nestle (-4.84%, N855.00) saw the lions share of the activity in the sector.

Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe: Industrials +1.05%, USD260k

After receiving the Wooden spoon during yesterdays trading session, Ok Zim bounced back to trade 1.1m shares, closing at 10c. Also amongst the winners was Truworths, which traded a total of 3.9m shares. The rise in the index was attributed by the dominance of the blue chip counters , as they continue to realize gains.
