A better day in Gaborone but still nothing to write home about with some activity in BTCL and Choppies the only names worth mentioning as 2.8m shares and 693k shares changed hands in the names respectively.
Things slowed down in Nairobi today but it was still farely active thanks to some action in Safcom ($3.8m) and EABL ($1.2m) as foreigners dominated purchases in both names. BATK put on strong performance and managed to close the day +3.6% higher on the back of foreign purchases. Both major banking stocks EQBNK and KNCB closed the day unchanged.
After yesterday’s 40bp cut in the repo rate we saw some chunky action on the Port Louis bourse. This activity was driven by the banks especially MCBG (unch, Rs207.00) and SBMH (unch, Rs0.64).
It was another bleak picture in Lagos today from an activity point of view with Wapco ($1.6m) and Zenith ($1.1m) the only names breaking the $1m mark. The fact that the Naira fell to 295 to the USD (at the time of writing) did not help matters either. Banking stocks took a bit of a beating with the sector falling -2.56% as ETI (-4.49%), GTB (-3.23%) and Access (-3.15%) were amongst the hardest hit. Consumers (-0.24%) closed slightly lower with Cadbury (-5.53%) and Dangote Sugar (-4.56%) dragging the sector lower.
Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.
Today we finally saw some volumes in Harare although this is still below the highs of a few years ago. Trading was dominated by Econet (20.25c) and Seedco (57c).
