Movers & Shakers: January 24, 2014


Botswana: DCI +0.24%, USD 231k

Better day in Gaborone today but still nothing amazing as value traded amounted to USD 231k as Choppies and Letshego drove activity.

Egypt: Closed for the day.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.54%, USD 8.6m

All about Safcom as aggressive buying from local investors continues to push the stock to record highs. The telco closed up another 3.3% today at KES 12.45 (an impressive +8.2% for the week) on solid volumes. EABL was extremely active with heavy foreign activity on both sides of the name. The banks were muted today although local buying did push Equity Bank and KNCB higher by 1.5% and 0.55% respectively – to KES 32.75 and KES 45.75.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.14%, USD 1.7m

Another relatively active day in Port Louis although most of today’s turnover took place in the thinly traded Swan. The big names were quiet with MCB slipping 12bps to Rs213.75. Alteo gained 28bps to Rs36.30 and Terra lost 79bps to Rs37.50.

Nigeria: ASI -0.10%, USD 38.4m

The roller coaster ride in banking stocks continued today as the Index fell -1.15% with Zenith (-3.53%), Skye Bank (-2.86%) and ETI (-2.77%) being the hardest hit. It seems that investors are very much undecided with regards to the recent increase in the CRR. Consumers (+0.07%) managed to close ever so slightly higher with good performances from Nigerian Breweries (+1.22%) and UACN (+1.38%) while Nestle (-1.26%) came off a bit. It was an absolutely mammoth day from an activity point of view as Zenith ($6.51m), First Bank ($3.46m), Guaranty Trust Bank ($3.40m) and WAPCO ($2.46m) were amongst the most active.

South Africa: Top 40 -1.36%, USD 1.57bn

The JSE ended the day lower with the Top 40 Index falling 1.36% to close at 41,739 while value traded amounted to USD 1.57bn. Industrials were the day's biggest losers with the Index falling 1.89% followed by Financials which fell 1.58% while Resources gained 0.04%. The Rand was trading at 11.11 and 15.18 to the USD and EUR respectively by the time local markets closed.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.65%, Mining +0.88%, USD 1.88m

Industrials fell by a further 65bps today as 2 of the larger stocks lost ground. Old Mutual lost 4% to 230c while also fell by 4% to 75.01c. Delta remained stable at 128c to end a torrid week while Econet closed marginally higher at 60c. The market was quiet with foreign action reduced on both the buy and sell sides.
