Botswana: DCI -0.28%, USD 2.6m

Market volumes remain strong. The market traded a total turnover of USD 130m. Toward the last 90 minutes of trading, Field Marshal Abdel Fatah-El Sisi was quoted in an interview with Reuters as saying that he cannot ignore calls by the majority of people asking him to run for president. Another rather slow day in Nairobi with value traded amounting to $5.2m as locals accounted for 63% of activity. On the positive side, foreigners were net buyers. EABL was the most active counter on the day thanks to foreign demand as 481k shares traded in the brewer. Not much on the go in Safcom as 5m shares traded, but the telco released a cautionary after the session saying that it intends to purchase some of the assets of Essar Telecoms. At the close of trading, the Monetary Policy Committee released its decision on the benchmark rate, holding it unchanged at 8.5% as it targets a further reduction in inflation levels.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.27%, USD 395k

Nothing much to note in the Mauritian bourse as general weakness persists. The Sem-7 slipped by 18bps with the losers including SBM (-93bps, Rs1.06) and Alteo (-59bps, Rs33.80). The gainers included MCB (+12bps, Rs212.75) and Terra (+78bps, Rs38.90).

Nigeria: ASI -0.92%, USD 30.24m

A cross in Zenith on the open got the day off to a flyer. All eyes were on the banking sector and particularly the Tier 1 names. Performance was mixed though with no real gainers or fallers in the sector. Consumers got a massive hiding though and lost 4.22%. Most of this was due to NB which lost 8.8% to N145.01 and on good volumes. Other fallers, albeit on muted volumes, included Guinness (-4.8%, N179), Nestle (-2.3%, N1075) and Cadbury (-1.45%, N85).
