Another dull day in Gaborone seeing the domestic index retreating on low volumes. BIHL ($27k) was the main mover accounting for 83% of today’s turnover.
The positive trend in Kenya continued as turnover increased by 18%. SAFCOM, COOP, EABL and EQBNK dominated the market turnover as all four accounted for approximately 80% of turnover. This positive run comes on the back of the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold the election results yesterday. This seems to have added a bit of positive sentiment into the market as we expect to see some stability.
Trading today was lead by CMPL with its mandatory offer and MCBG which accounted for over 50% of today market turnover. MCBG declined by 0.2% trading at Rs276.00, ENL was unchanged at Rs42.30, SBM also unmoved trading at Rs7.62 and CMPL followed suit remaining at Rs9.52 being the largest volume mover on the day with almost 12k shares exchanging hands on the day.
Profit taking dominated the market today with only the Insurance sector closing higher and the Industrials flat. All other indices were down on the day with the Banks leading the downward charge with names like Guaranty and Zenithbank losing 1.38% and 2.96% respectively. Forte Oil continues its heavy sell-off as investors react to its removal from the MSCI Frontier Market Index.
Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.
The presidential topsy-turvy continues to hover around the market as it has shed almost 35% since the temporary military takeover. Delta retreated 19.87% on large volumes ($1.6m) trading at 131.40c, NMB lost 10% closing 9.00c and Seedco fell 18.42% trading at 214.75c while the rest of the market was extremely quiet.
