Movers & Shakers: April 24, 2014


Botswana: DCI -0.24%, USD 4.79m

It was an excellent day in Gaborone from an activity point of view as value traded amounted to USD 4.79m thanks mostly to a cross in Letlole (20m shares). There was also some activity in Choppies as 1.14m shares traded.

Egypt: Closed for the day.

Kenya: NSE 20 +0.38%, USD 9.79m

There was a slight drop in activity today but the market was still rather active as value traded amounted to USD 9.8m. Equity Bank ($2.27m) was the day's top mover as foreigners dominated purchases in the bank while locals dominated sales. A large foreign cross in ARML ($1.65m) helped boost activity in the counter. Safcom ($1.25m) was fairly active as foreign purchases (82.9%) drove the telco 1.5% higher to close the day at KES 13.20.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.24%, USD 1.62m

Some action in the hotels today as 2 of the most active stocks were Lux Island Resorts (Rs40.20) and Sun Resorts (Rs40.20). In the Sem-7, MCBG gained 23bps to Rs218 while SBM fell by 96bps to Rs1.03 and NMH lost 29bps to Rs86.75.

Nigeria: ASI -0.46%, USD 69.32m

It was a mammoth day in Lagos from an activity point of view thanks to a number of chunky crosses in a few of the big names as total value traded amounted to $69.32m. Zenith Bank ($18.85m) was the most active name on the day and released Q1 2014 numbers just ahead of the close. There was also some heavy activity in Nestle ($15.44m), FBNH ($12.61m) and NB ($9.87m). There was some form of profit taking in banking stocks as the index fell -0.40% with GTB (-2.39%) and Access (-1.44%) weighing on the sector. Consumers (-0.49%) also closed the day lower thanks to the likes of Dangote Sugar (-3.04%) and NB (-1.33%).

Zimbabwe: Industrials +1.73%, Mining +1.22%, USD 13.26m

It was a great day in Harare as value traded amounted to USD 13.26m thanks to two special bargains in Seedco totalling USD 12.67m. There was some activity in Delta ($408k) while Econet ($33k) was rather quiet. The market closed the day higher with the Industrial Index gaining +1.73%.
