A dull day in Gaborone with only mild activity in Barclays (465t) and FNBB (360t).
On the first day of presidential elections the market was mixed, eventually ending the day in the negative territory. The EGX30 closed down 30bps on high volumes of EGP1.46 billion. Local institutions ended the day as net sellers, maintaining the second round of profit-taking (buy the rumor, sell the fact), as elections begin drawing to a close with an expected win for El-Sisi. CCAP rallied 4% on a technical breakthrough, reaching a high of EGP4.77. PIOH rallied 2.18% trading two times the average three-month turnover. AMER ended the day down 68bps to last print down 3.40% after local newspapers reported that the government plans to cut tourism subsidies in November.
A chunky foreign cross in SCAN accounted for a large portion of today’s turnover in a generally slow day. SCAN closed up 50bps to KES 48.50. There was also some decent activity in CFC Stanbic which lost 1.4% to KES 142.00. The usual suspects were painstakingly quiet with minimal trading in Safcom (+40bps, KES 13.00), Equity Bank (+1.3%, KES 40.25) and EABL (-2.9%, KES 271).
A chunky cross in the normally illiquid Ciel accounted for the extremely high volumes in Port Louis today. In normal trading the Sem-7 lost 22bps on the back of drops in NMH (-59bps, Rs84.00), Terra (-14bps, Rs35.95) and IBL (-2.83%, Rs103).
A large cross in DangCem on the open accounted for about half of today’s total turnover. With the US and UK on holiday, foreign involvement was expectedly quiet with local investors dominant. There were some decent trades in FBNH, GTB, Access, NB and Oando. Banks closed marginally in the red with Tier 2 names generally soft. Consumers ended the day largely unchanged with performance mixed – Cadbury (+1.99%), Nestle (-93bps) and Dangote Sugar (-1.32%). The bulk of the action in the consumers was in NB as the brewer closed at N176.00. Oando lost 4.9% to N19.02 on large volumes
