Movers & Shakers: July 21, 2014

Botswana: Closed Today

Egypt: EGX 30 -1.22%, USD 56m

Egypt witnessed profit-taking pressure as yields on Egyptian treasury bills jumped more than 1% on Sunday following the interest rate increase by the Central Bank last week. The EGX30 plunged 1.22% to close at 8471 points on low volumes of EGP404 million. OCDI shed 0.05% with 1.5 million shares changing hands. The company will open a construction tender on a 301-acre land plot by the end of year, with an estimated cost of EGP5 billion over six years. AUTO was unchanged today, setting plans for new projects to be discussed by the board in August. If approved, a possible capital increase through a rights issue will follow. SVCE (-1.63%) prepares for an international tender to import two coal mills and two cement mills worth USD120 million.

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.28%, USD 8.4m

Foreign participation remained generally subdued on the Nairobi bourse although today was skewed towards the sell side. Safcom was yet again the most dominant player as it shed 80bps to KES12.00 followed by EABL which closed unchanged at KES294. The banks were generally quieter and after last week’s rally showed some signs of vulnerability. KNCB closed unchanged at KES54.00 while Equity Bank lost 50bps to KES45.75.

Mauritius: Semdex -0.11%, USD 119k

A disastrous day in Port Louis as a complete lack of interest permeated the bourse. Names like MCBG did not even trade.

Nigeria: ASI -0.25%, USD 27.3m

Local investors dominated the bourse today by playing an active role in names like Oando and Transcor. Oando gained 4% to N26.00 on big volumes ($7.5m) while Transcor ($3.4m) fell by 3.55% to N5.70 after releasing H1 results. In normal trading we saw the banks fall by 49bps with most names closing slightly in the red. Activity was dominated by FBNH (-1.76%, N15.62), GTB (+3bps, N30.01) and Zenith Bank (-1.07%, N24.95) while Skye Bank saw 1 chunky cross early on. The consumers closed marginally positive with almost all the action taking place in NB (+84bps, N177.09) and Nestle (unch, N1125).

Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.11%, USD 308k

A pathetic start to the week in Harare as volume traded just never got going. The large caps were also quiet with Econet falling to 72.5c and Delta closing unchanged at 125c.
