Movers & Shakers: October 21, 2014

Botswana: DCI unch, USD 310k

Nothing notable to report in Gaborone with almost the entire volume taking place in Engen (1000t).

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.39%, USD 4.7m

A painfully dull day in Nairobi as the exchange was feeling the effects of the long weekend. The NSE actually had some technical difficulties for parts of the day which always chasing away investors. The most active stock on the day was Safcom as some aggressive buying returned. The telco closed at KES 12.15. There was also some decent action in KNCB (KES 56.25) and Equity Bank (KES 50.75) while EABL was extremely dead (KES 272).

Mauritius: Semdex -0.16%, USD 1.58m

A very solid day in Port Louis as turnover amounted to USD 1.58m with MCBG (141k shares) dominating proceedings while only 153k SBMH traded. There was also some activity in the usually illiquid MEI as 50k shares traded

Nigeria : ASI +0.29%, USD 19.8m

A really dull session in Lagos and that despite a couple of crosses in names like Nestle and NB. In general trading there really was a lethargic feel to the day. Banks were strong for most of the day although some softness very late in the session left the sector up just 38bps. Most of the action took place in GTB (unch, N27.14) and FBNH (+79bps, N12.68). Consumers also gained a modest amount of 28bps with almost all the activity taking place in Nestle (+52bps, N980.05) and NB (+98bps, N168.00). There was also some crossing in normally illiquid names like Mansard and Transcor while Oando was its usual active self (+2.60%, N23.70).

Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.74%, USD 816k

It was a better day in Harare but still nothing to write home about as turnover amounted to USD 816k thanks to some small action in DAWN ($294k) and OK Zim ($280k). The market closed the day lower with the Industrial Index falling -0.74%.
