The general trend continued in the market today with foreigners dominating proceedings- accounted for 62.3% of activity. Foreigners were net sellers in Safaricom causing the name to close down by 0.9% at KES16.90 whilst Co-op bank closed up 1.2% on the back of foreign buying. Top movers included Equity bank (+0.5%, KES46.75), Diamond Trust (unch, KES240) and Bamburi (-2.7%, KES146).
In April, monthly tourist arrivals increased by 2.2%. Large domestic off board crosses were registered in MCBG (2.5m at Rs203.50) and SBM (349.7m at Rs0.9233) and another 173m shares crossed at Rs0.93. CEIL also registered a cross (3.5m shares at Rs6.60). The counters closed the day at Rs203 (-0.1%), Rs0.93 (-1.1%) and Rs6.90 (unchanged) respectively. LUX gained 0.4% to close at Rs58.75 after trading a total of 1.5m shares
The downward trend continued in the market today with activity remaining below desired levels. The Banking index lost 0.96% on the back of losses in ETI (-4.98%, N23.27), FBN (-1.65%, N8.95) and Zenith Bank (-1.41%, N20.96). Gains in NB (+2.21%, N156.90), Flourmills (+4.70%, N36.95) and Dangsugar (+1.56%, N6.50) resulted in a strong close in the Consumer index (+0.82%). Major sector laggards included Intbrew (-2.06%, N20) and Guinness (-3.46%, N155). Significant contributors included Zenith Bank ($5.4m), GTB ($712k) and NB ($894k).
