Movers & Shakers: March 24, 2017

Botswana: DCI +0.24%, USD 1.05m

Another reasonable day in Gaborone although today it was the turn of Choppies (255t) to dominate the volume charts. There was some smaller action in Letshego (216t).

Kenya: NSE 20 -0.20%, USD 6.2m

Turnover bounced to a pleasing value today mostly thanks to Safcom which witnessed some chunky foreign blocks. The telco gained 50bps to KES18.45 and accounted for over half the total market turnover. The rest of the market was evenly split between local and foreign participants. The next most active stocks included BATK (-2.21%, KES880.00) and KNCB (+80bps, KES31.50).

Mauritius: Semdex +0.09%, USD 1.04m

Today’s action was dominated by SBMH (unch, Rs7.00) as MCBG (unch, Rs224.00) had a rather subdued end to the week. IBL (+40bps, Rs38.75) reached yet another all-time high.

Nigeria: ASI -0.23%, USD 5.1m

The session ambled along at a snail’s pace for 3.5hrs and only in the last 30 minutes did we see anything resembling any trading. Even still, volumes remain woefully low and this lack of interest manifests itself in the general dwindling of the index. Both the Banks (-76bps) and Consumers (-31bps) drifted lower. As has been the case recently, activity is being driven by local participants and today was no exception – locals bid for Intbrew (-1.96%, N15.00) and also participated in Stanbic (+6bps, N17.71). They were the only 2 names worth mentioning with the rest of the market painfully dull yet again.

Please note that the index figure above is correct at the time of writing.

Zimbabwe: Industrials -0.25%, USD 8.9m

A mammoth cross of 52m shares in Econet (at 14c) was a real talking point in the African markets today. Details remain sketchy but it is believed to be related to the company and the rights issue. There was some trading in Econet in the normal market while Delta (85.5c) also saw some activity.
